Cross Cradle Breastfeeding Position

Finding the right feeding position to feed your baby is key. In the below video, our postpartum doula Samantha, explains the cross cradle hold for nursing.

Supplies Needed

  • Pillow for baby

  • Footrest or ottoman

Benefits of Cross Cradle Hold

  • Bonding

  • Great first position

  • Easy to see babies and latch

  • Great for skin to skin

Challenges with Cross Cradle Hold

  • Harder to adjust babies position

  • Harder to larger breast

  • May be more irritating for cesarean scars

  • Can cause pressure on lower back

Getting into Cross Cradle Hold Position

We always recommend that you care for yourself first. By getting your body into a comfortable position, the energetic flow between you and baby will be positive. A few other things to watch:

  • Pillow situated for baby to be breast level

  • Feet can be helpful on otoman to bring baby to breast rather than breast to baby, but also flat on ground

  • Arm on baby head side may use pillow to support baby’s head

  • One hand to support baby one hand to support breast

Getting Baby into Position for Cross Cradle Hold

  • Hold baby in straight line

  • Arms out of the way as much as possible

  • Baby can wear whatever is comfortable, great time for skin to skin or can be weather determined
