Finding the right feeding position to feed your baby is key. In the below video, our postpartum doula Samantha, explains the cross cradle hold for nursing.
Supplies Needed
Pillow for baby
Footrest or ottoman
Benefits of Cross Cradle Hold
Bonding
Great first position
Easy to see babies and latch
Great for skin to skin
Challenges with Cross Cradle Hold
Harder to adjust babies position
Harder to larger breast
May be more irritating for cesarean scars
Can cause pressure on lower back
Getting into Cross Cradle Hold Position
We always recommend that you care for yourself first. By getting your body into a comfortable position, the energetic flow between you and baby will be positive. A few other things to watch:
back against chair
Pillow situated for baby to be breast level
Feet can be helpful on otoman to bring baby to breast rather than breast to baby, but also flat on ground
Arm on baby head side may use pillow to support baby’s head
One hand to support baby one hand to support breast
Getting Baby into Position for Cross Cradle Hold
Hold baby in straight line
Arms out of the way as much as possible
Baby can wear whatever is comfortable, great time for skin to skin or can be weather determined
