The football hold is very popular and comfortable position for both the lactating parent and baby. Our postpartum doula, Samantha, shows you below how to succeed in this nursing position.
Supplies Needed
Multiple pillows to support baby on either side
Benefits of Football Hold
Bonding
Easy to see babies face and latch
Easier to manipulate babies head position
Easier for larger breast to get deeper latch
Does not irritate cesarean scar
Challenges with Football Hold
Takes a bit more skill and practice
Could be harder to do in public
Does not get the same level of skin to skin contact
Getting into Football Hold Position
As always, take care of yourself first and then get baby into position. You may need more space around you to switch sides, so this is best on a couch or bed.
Back against chair/couch/headboard
Regular pillow set back for elbow and baby support. Potentially have second pillow ready for other side
Feet flat on ground since baby is already a bit closer to breast
Elbow back, hand supporting baby head, other hand to manipulate breast as needed
Getting Baby into Position for Football Hold
Put baby in a straight line
Arms out of the way as much as possible
Baby can wear whatever is comfortable, great time for skin to skin or can be weather determined
