Realistic New Years Resolutions for New Moms

New Years Resolutions are great and all, but how many times how many of you made a resolution to do something you *wanted* to do, but it just wasn’t reasonable?

🙋‍♀️Me. I have done it. Many many times. But this year, I am changing it up a little. I am not trying to give myself actions that need to be done daily or the day will seem like a failure because I am a mom, I run a business, and I also enjoy eating and sleeping. Instead, my New Years Resolutions are going to be THOUGHTS.

Real resolution #1: Show Gratitude

How many times do you really stop and say (or think) THANK YOU? If I am being completely honest, it isn’t as much as it could be. Not because I am not grateful for the good parts of my life, but usually because I do not let myself notice the good, and be appreciative for it. So here goes:

❤️ Thank you to my son. You made me a Mom, and there is nothing I love more.

❤️ Thank you to my wonderful husband who tolerates listening to me talk about placentas, uteruses, birth, breastfeeding, and all the fun topics that come from being married to doula while also challenging me to do more, but also reminding me I am enough.

❤️ Thank you to my wonderful Mom who answers the phone in the middle of the night when I have a client in labor and need child care.

❤️ Thank you to amazing doulas that I get to talk to daily. You all have allowed me to build a business that I absolutely love.

❤️ Thank you to my clients for hiring us! Without you, this dream would have stayed a dream.

❤️ And thank you to my dog, because really, she is the best in the entire world.

Real resolution #2: Be Confident

This year, another resolution I have and I would like to share with you all is to be confident. I am not saying overly confident where you can’t see your mistakes. But confident in your decision, whatever that decision is, and even if you change it. My goal this year is to move forward confidently. That means not doubting my feelings, my thoughts, or my actions because I know I am being deliberate. I may be wrong sometimes, I may be right (most times 🤣), but if I am confident in my action, at least I am doing my best. And that is all I can ask for in the end.

Real resolution #3: Drink Your Coffee While Hot

Such a small thing, but also shows how we as mothers, fathers, parents, put ourselves last. Cold coffee isn’t good cold, no denying that. So why can’t we take the 11 minutes it takes to drink our coffee while it is still warm? Yes, sometimes the baby gets hungry at less than convenient times or the toddler needs a snack right when you are trying to do something else. But we all have a few minutes to enjoy hot coffee every morning (and afternoon, we are parents after all).  SO in 2020, I am going to drink my coffee while it is still hot (or mostly hot, I am not a perfectionist).

{Real resolution #4: Find Your Happy}

Whatever makes you happy, find it, do it, and love it. It doesn’t have to be huge like checking off a new country to visit every month, that just really isn’t attainable to anyone. But, it makes me happy to walk my dog, be outside with my kid, feel like my clients are being better support, and take trainings. So I am going to do more of that! Obviously, there is going to be some things we do that don’t make us happy and bring joy (I see you laundry pile), but in 2020, I want to focus on those great parts, so the less than great parts are okay.

Real resolution #5: Look Good, Feel Good

My hairdresser has been saying this for years, and finally in 2020, I am going to listen to him. But more importantly, I am going to look good how I WANT to look good. You won’t see me in fancy clothes and heels picking my kid up from school, nope not me. But you will start to see me in clothes that fit my body and make me feel good about what I am wearing. Too short, too tight, too loose, nope, not in 2020. If I am don’t feel good in what I am wearing, that won’t happen, because when I think I look good, I feel good. Maybe I will throw some lipstick on to make it a fancy day.

Hopefully these helped you jump start some ideas of how to change your thoughts, rather than saying you will exercise 9 days a week and realizing that is just not possible.
